Leaders of the five-nation forum Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (Acmecs) yesterday endorsed 14 flagship projects that they hope will attract foreign development partners. The action plan includes a proposal on rubber production in Cambodia with Thai and French interests, Thai-French cooperation in developing fruit orchards in Cambodia, Thai-French support in upgrading a technical college in Savannakhet, and renovation of Savannakhet airport as well as development of geographical information system (GIS) links within the five countries to provide economic data for investors.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said the sub-region needed to consider a one-stop service to bring together people, capital, and goods while upgrading transport links.

There should be a forum for transport ministers to meet, he said. Gen Surayud also backed Vietnam's idea to forge cooperation with Thailand in the rice industry by exchanging know-how.

Financial constraints are a major obstacle for Acmecs which was formed in 2004. Thailand is looking into ways to bring in foreign loans to bridge the infrastructure gap in the sub-region.
