Envoys to discuss Islamic issues

Envoys to discuss Islamic issues.

Thai ambassadors serving in Muslim countries have been called to a meeting in Bangkok later this month. The meeting, scheduled for Jan 25-27, is to allow the envoys to exchange views on Islamic issues in light of the southern insurgency, said deputy permanent secretary for Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

The Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), with a combined population of some 1.7 billion people, has become an important strategic grouping for Thailand over the past few years after the eruption of the southern violence.

The ministry has in recent years tried to keep pace with the Muslim world through a permanent study group.

Thailand is now preparing for the next OIC ministerial meeting in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad in the middle of the year.

Thai diplomats from East and Southeast Asia, including Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam and China plan to hold a separate meeting Jan 17-20 in Bangkok.
