Explosives found under pickup in front Pattani military camp

Explosives found under pickup in front Pattani military camp.

A military camp in Pattani province narrowly escaped bomb attack on Friday after soldiers found explosives concealed under a pickup that was about to enter the camp.

Bomb squad team moved the pickup to an open area in Sirindhorn military camp and destroyed the explosives. The procedure damaged the vehicle's front part.

It was the first time that suspected militants tried to attack a military camp.

Army's spokesman Col Akkara Tipparote said in Bangkok that army soldiers were inspecting vehicles at the entrance of Sirindhorn military camp in Yarang district at about 7am when they found the explosives hidden under a green pickup of a sergeant who worked in the camp.

The bomb squad team was alerted, the vehicle was moved to an open area in the camp and the explosives were destroyed.

The camp authorities are now investigating owner of the pickup, identified as Sgt Ammart Ariwari who resides in nearby Yala province.
