PUBLIC SAFETY : See-through bins being put in city's parks

PUBLIC SAFETY : See-through bins being put in city's parks.

The city administration will install 2,000 clear plastic rubbish bins in public parks in Bangkok this week to improve public safety in the wake of the New Year bombings. Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said a total of 2,000 transparent refuse bins _ 20-litre cylinder-shaped bins, 60cm high and 30cm wide _ will replace the opaque bins at all 22 public parks run by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

So far, about 200 see-through bins have been put in place at four BMA-run parks _ Lumpini park, Vachirabenjatat park, Benjasiri park and Queen Sirikit park. Existing garbage bins at the remaining public parks in the city will be gradually replaced with transparent ones this week, said the governor.

The BMA is also considering new designs for garbage bins to put along city streets and other areas.

A campaign will also be launched to urge people to help reduce the amount of garbage. People will be taught to sort garbage for recycling and re-use.
