Teachers Day cremation of Juling likely

Teachers Day cremation of Juling likely.

POST REPORTERS

The royally-sponsored cremation of teacher Juling Pongkunmul is expected to take place on Jan 16, which coincides with Teachers Day. Chiang Rai deputy governor Ruengwan Bua-nuch, said a committee organising the funeral rites for the late teacher has asked for royal permission to arrange the cremation on that day through the Royal Household Bureau. The committee is awaiting a reply.

Ms Ruengwan said it would be convenient for teachers from other areas to travel to attend the cremation in Chiang Rai on Teachers Day, an official holiday for teachers across the country.

She said relevant agencies, local residents and Juling's family members are working together to organise the funeral rites in Juling's honour.

''The committee has agreed that paintings by Juling will be put on show for those attending the funeral rites at Wat Pong Sanuk ,'' Ms Ruengwan said.

More than 100 Chiang Rai-based soldiers have been sent to clean up the cemetery at Ban Pong Noi village, where Juling's ashes will be kept. The cemetery is about one kilometre from the temple.

Chaiyant Luangkaew, director of Doi Luang kindergarten, where Juling attended as a young child, has postponed activities for Children's Day tomorrow until after the cremation.

''Most pupils are still saddened by the teacher's death and are in no mood for festivities that day,'' Mr Chaiyant said.

Chakkrapat Wata, secretary of the Teachers Council of Thailand, said the agency is preparing to honour Juling and Prasarn Makchu, a 48-year-old Thai-language teacher at Ban Buerang school in Narathiwat's Rueso district, who was shot dead in front of his class of 30 pupils by a gunman dressed up as a student in July last year.

Meanwhile, Juling's adoptive mother Khammee Pongkunmul confirmed that Chanpen Sarnkham is the teacher's biological mother. Mrs Khammee said she and her husband had adopted the young Juling from Mrs Chanpen, who divorced her husband.
