Ukrainian tourist dies in Samet bungalow blaze

Ukrainian tourist dies in Samet bungalow blaze.

A female tourist was killed in a fire that engulfed a wooden bungalow in a resort on Koh Samet yesterday. The woman, identified by a friend as a 43-year-old Ukrainian, was found dead in the fire-gutted bungalow at Ao Phai. She and a woman friend had checked in on Jan 10.

Larpsin Putsorn, headman of Koh Samet, quoted the woman as saying she heard her friend cry for help in the middle of the night and woke to see the bungalow in flames.

She then reportedly ran out and asked for help. People in bungalows nearby tried to extinguish the fire, but it spread quickly, engulfing the wooden hut.

She said she did not know exactly what caused the fire, but suspected her friend, who was a smoker, might have fallen asleep with a lit cigarette.

Police collected evidence from the scene and took the body away for an autopsy.

The Ban Pae tambon administration organisation has asked for additional funds to purchase a medium-sized fire engine to cope with fires on the island
