Three marines critically wounded by bomb

Two civilians shot dead in other attacks

Three members of a marine unit were seriously wounded in a roadside bomb attack during a routine patrol in Bacho district on Friday. The eight-man unit was riding on four motorcycles when the bomb went off near a bridge in Ban Sompoi village.

Critically wounded were 1st Chief Petty Officer Songkran Kulawong, Seaman Teerasak Selanon and Seaman Nattapong Yayuen.

Police from the forensic department yesterday inspected the scene of the explosion and found fragments of components believed to be those of a 5kg home-made bomb set off by a detonator.

In Rangae district, a villager was shot dead at close range by two drive-by shooters at a teashop on Friday.

Assamin Jehsoh, 20, died on the way to hospital. The victim came to the teashop after saying evening prayers at a nearby mosque.

In Narathiwat, a 10kg roadside bomb detonated by a car alarm remote control, narrowly missed hitting a patrol unit in Tak Bai district yesterday.

The blast, however, slightly damaged a nearby car.

No injuries were reported.

Police said militants used a car alarm remote control instead of a mobile phone to trigger the bomb in order to avoid blocks of the phone signal.

In Pattani, truck driver Ying Issaro. 56, was shot and killed by four drive-by attackers on motorcycles on the Pattani-Songkhla road in Nong Chik district yesterday while driving his motorcycle to town.
