High-pressure squirt gun ban

The Consumer Protection Board (CPB) has issued a temporary ban on sales of high-pressure water guns to ensure safe celebrations of the Songkran holiday.

CPB secretary-general Rassami Witthawet said the water guns can cause serious injuries when fired directly at people and moving vehicles, especially motorcycles.

Violators will be subject to a maximum five-year jail sentence and/or a fine of 500,000 baht, she said. Complaints can be lodged via the CPB hotline 1166.

The ban was first imposed in 2003 following complaints about the potential dangers of the guns. Since then, the board has issued a ban when Songkran comes around. Many squirt gun sellers, however, disagree with the ban saying it will hurt business.
