It's never too late to get married, as David Lyman, chairman and chief values officer of Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd, recently proved. Lyman celebrated his marriage to his "ideal woman", Thassaneeya "Poo" Pimpila, with a traditional wedding ceremony in the morning witnessed by family and close friends, followed by a reception at the InterContinental Bangkok, attended by more than 600 guests comprising friends - many of whom had flown in from overseas - colleagues and relatives.
The party took place on March 23, exactly three years after the couple first met at an art exhibition at 100 Tonson Gallery. The venue was decorated with photographs of the couple. Guests enjoyed a lavish dinner and danced to the Hot Chilli Band.
The couple were both dressed in white: The bride wore a white lace bustier with a long gown, the groom wore a white fedora to match his white suit, looking - according to the guest of honour, former prime minister Anand Panyarachun - mighty similar to Rhett Butler. For those under the age of 50, this was the character played by Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind, a comparison that was much appreciated by the groom. "Or rather, Al Capone," he added as an anti-climax, without skipping a beat.
Anand also remarked to Lyman upon seeing wedding portraits of the newly-weds, "I can see why you married her, but I just cannot see why she married you!"
Friends have noted that there is indeed a significant change in Lyman's demeanour, apart from his hairstyle. He now walks with a dreamy look and a permanent lopsided smile etched to his face, and spouts phrases like, "Everytime I see her, I fall in love with her all over again."
Is he becoming an ol' softie after all? "I'm just a big marshmallow," he grins.
During a recent "aura scan", it was discovered that Lyman now exudes a golden aura of happiness and contentment. Aura or not, he definitely appears that way, which is a reflection of Poo's effect on Lyman.
During his speech, he gave some advice to married couples, gleaned from his vast experience and marriages over the years.
"First, do everything your wife tells you to do, because she knows best. Second, always let the man have the last word, as long as it's 'Yes, dear.' Finally, always wake up and say 'Good morning, I love you,' and go to bed saying 'Good night, I love you."'
Poo showed her feelings for Lyman in a different way, surprising him with a rendition of the song You Are Still the One, which she dedicated to her dear hubby.
So has David Lyman finally turned over a new leaf? "A leopard doesn't change its spots: I'm still a dirty old man!" he noted with an unmistaken mischievous glint in his eye.
