Songkhla - About 2,000 people plan to rally in Songkhla today to give Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda moral support following moves by anti-coup groups to petition His Majesty the King for his removal from the post.

They plan to gather at Mahavajiravudh School to show support for Gen Prem, a native of Songkhla, according to Songkhla municipality mayor Uthit Chuchuay, who also chairs the school's alumni association.

The mayor denounced the people who had made verbal attacks against Gen Prem.

He said leaflets have been distributed in the province's 16 districts to urge people to join the rally. The gathering would be peaceful, he added.

Anti-coup activists have accused the Privy Council president of meddling in politics. One of the anti-coup groups, the Saturday Voice, has initiated a campaign to seek 100,000 signatures in support of a petition to the King to remove Gen Prem as president of the Privy Council.

Gen Prem yesterday presided over the opening of the fifth San Jai Thai Su Jai Thai Project at the National Science Museum in Pathum Thani province. He simply smiled when asked by reporters to comment on the campaign against him.
