AIS chief : No political link

AIS chief : No political link

Advanced Info Service president Wichien Mektrakarn said it was unfair to link yesterday's sharp increase in the share prices of Shin Corp companies to the victory of the People Power Party.

He said he did not think the price increases were political or linked to expectations that Shin founder Thaksin Shinawatra would return home, but merely represented profit-taking by investors.

Besides, he said, yesterday was the first day of trading after the Sunday election, and was an opportune time for speculators to profit.

He added that AIS, the country's largest mobile operator, and parent Shin Corp would continue to try to distance themselves from politics.

The Shinawatra family's sale of Shin shares in January 2006 to Temasek Holding of Singapore touched off political turmoil that culminated in the coup eight months later.

An industry source also said yesterday that the telecom sector could be exploited by politicians in the coming year because of the huge investments pending in technologies such as 3G once a new regulator is created and starts approving new licences.
