ASUS rejects IBM's patent infringement claims

Taipei (dpa) - Taiwanese computer company ASUS on Friday rejected US computer giant IBM's claims that its products have infringed three IBM patents.

"Investigation by our US-based patent lawyers showed that there is no evidence of our violating IBM patents, and these patents maybe do not exist," ASUS said in a statement.

On Thursday, IBM said it had filed a complaint against ASUS and its North American subsidiary, ASUS Computer International, with the US International Trade Commission.

It claimed the patent infringement occurs in ASUS' own-brand computers as well as in products the Taiwan contract manufacturer makes for other brands.

The allegedly infringing ASUS products include notebook computers, so-called backbone computer systems, servers, networking, semiconductors and other computer components, IBM said in a statement.

"IBM has made repeated attempts to reach a licensing agreement between the companies. IBM's position has been - and remains - that ASUS either must license or stop using IBM's patented technology," it said.

Founded in 1989 by four engineers from Acer, ASUS has grown into one of the world's leading computer and peripherals companies. Its 2006 revenues totalled 17.4 billion US dollars.
