The best of both worlds

ASTON MARTIN / V12 VANTAGE RS

The best of both worlds

Aston fuses its two model ranges to create another mouth-watering front-engined sports car

- It looks just like any other Aston Martin currently on sale...

We agree: "C'mon Aston, can't you do any better?". But on the contrary, there's nothing wrong with that approach simply because the current model ranges arguably have the best-looking sports cars on this planet, namely the DB9 (Coupe', Volante, DBS and LM) and Vantage (Coupe', Roadster and N400). The LM and N40 are special edition models to celebrate Aston's motor sports activities.

- So what is it this time? A mix between the Vantage and DB9?

You could say so. What Aston did was dump the DB9's V12 concept into the Vantage which was originally designed to house just the V8 used in the fixed-top Coupe' and open-top Roadster. This, according to Aston, shows the flexibility of the VH architecture used for both model ranges.

- That's it?

Oh no. Actually, this 6.0-litre V12 is a development from the DBR9 racecar developing some 600hp and features dry sump lubrication system, tuned length exhaust manifolds, forged pistons and steel con-rods, revised lift and duration camshafts and modified cylinder heads.

- And it's got the lightweight treatment too, right?

Yep. Like in the just-unveiled DBS flagship, the bonnet and boot lid are moulded in carbonfibre to help achieve an overall dry weight of no more than 1,600kg. Also, the Vantage RS adopts motor sport-inspired carbon ceramic brake discs just like in the DBS.

- So, it must be a fast car on the move...

Aston Martin certainly thinks so in its own game. The 375hp per tonne power-to-weight ratio the company claims help propel the Vantage RS to 100kph in four seconds flat. That may look quick. But the less powerful Ferrari F430 Scuderia, Porsche 911 Turbo and GT2, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and Nissan GT-R all do it better in the three-second bracket.

- Hmm... so why would I even consider the Vantage RS?

Who said you could get one? It's still billed as a concept and will make its first public appearance at January's Detroit motor show after VIPs saw it first at Aston's design centre in the UK this month. But you're not wrong, though. Production is highly likely.

- So I guess it's for the true Aston fan...

Yeah, even if it's going to cost as much as a Superleggera, GT2 or Scuderia at B25m in Thailand. But just look at the detailing of the Vantage RS's design... it's really mouth-watering. Check out that low body, front and rear diffusers aping motor sports Astons and the cabin that's rich with suede trim.

- You know what? I think I'm getting two GT-Rs instead, one each for my twin sons...

You don't seem to be a fanatic of driving greats coming out from Europe's famed, finest car stables. But we really cannot blame you for opting two Nissans (B10m each) and still use that extra change to go for a Mitsubishi Evo X (B5m) when you want to feel young again. Feel free mate.
