TOR CHITTINAND
All Thailand's tennis stars secured comfortable wins in the opening round to move into the quarter-finals yesterday.
Top seed Danai Udomchoke and Weerapat Doakmaiklee triumphed in the men's singles, while Noppawan Lertcheewakarn and Nudnida Luangnam won in the women's singles.
Danai, the reigning Asian Games champion, thrashed Cambodia's Sambat Orn 6-0, 6-1 and Weerapat beat Jose De Jesue of Timor by the same scoreline.
Danai is expected to have a tougher assignment in his quarter-final against Filipino Frederick Taino.
''It was an easy match,'' said world number 155 Danai. ''But my next match against Taino will be tough because he was once in the world's top 120. I don't have much information about him.''
Noppawan defeated Dala Nilaxay of Laos 6-0, 6-1 and Nudnida beat Czarina Arevalo of the Philippines 6-1, 6-3.
Top-ranked Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia whitewashed Burma's Oung Thandar 6-0, 6-0.
In the mixed doubles, Napaporn Tongsalee and Sanchai Ratiwatana struggled past Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Dung and Le Quac Khanh 6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-4.
Tamarine Tanasugarn and Sonchat Ratiwatana scored an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Laos' Dala Nilaxay and Viengtay Thepsouvanha.
