Thailand's top seed Danai Udomchoke moved into the semi-finals but Weerapat Doakmaiklee suffered a shock quarter-final defeat yesterday.

In the men's singles, Asian Games champion Danai beat Frederick Taino of the Philippines 6-2, 7-6 (6), while fourth-ranked Weerapat lost 6-4, 7-5 to Cambodia's Nysan Tan.

''My serve was very good in the first set and I did not have any problems,'' said Danai.

''But when Taino regrouped in the second set, he caused some trouble for me to overcome.''

Danai will meet Indonesia's Elbert Sie in the semi-finals and the Thai is confident that he will beat him again after defeating the same opponent in the team event a few days ago.

Weerapat said he was disappointed by the surprise defeat against the Cambodian, who once lived in France.

''He played very well and his groundstroke was good,'' Weerapat said.

''I am very sorry that I could not win any medal in the singles.''

In the women's singles, Thailand's Nudnida Luangnam and Noppawan Lertcheewakarn cruised their way into the semi-final stage.

In yesterday's quarter-finals, Nudnida beat Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Dung 6-0, 6-1 and Noppawan defeated Diane Matias 6-2, 6-0.
