Yala _ A village headman was decapitated after he and three village defence volunteers were shot dead in Yala's Bannang Sata district yesterday morning. Another defence volunteer was seriously wounded in the attack.

Police said Maleh Mongyadeng, 35, a village head in tambon Tanohputeh, and four defence volunteers were fired on by armed men after a visit to Maleh's house.

The attackers then beheaded Maleh before they fled the scene, police said.

In Muang district, two soldiers were wounded by a bomb explosion yesterday morning.

Three teenagers seen near the scene of the explosion were detained as suspects. Police said tests revealed traces of explosive on them.

In Raman district, a suspected core leader of the BRN-Coordinate separatist group was arrested yesterday after he returned from Malaysia.

The suspect was identified as Abdul Bazi Sata, 43, who had been on the run for three years.

Police said he had gone into hiding in Malaysia after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was apprehended yesterday when he crossed back into Raman district.

Mr Abdul was believed to be a member of a council of Muslim religious scholars said to have been disseminating radical ideas and recruiting young Muslims to join their group.

He was also said to be a core leader of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) group, which provides weapons training for new recruits in Raman district.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont is scheduled to meet his Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the opening ceremony of a friendship bridge in Narathiwat's Waeng district on Friday.
