ROYAL SPEECH

King calls for stability in the country

His Majesty the King last night urged the armed forces and police to be a strong pillar in stabilising the country, which, he said, needs strength and honesty to prevent it from collapsing. The King was making the statement to all new generals and those having been promoted to higher ranks at Chitralada Palace. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont led them to an audience granted by His Majesty.

The King said all units in the armed forces and police had a duty to ensure the security and safety of citizens.

But he said their strength was more important than weapons in carrying out their duties.

''You are soldiers. But that does not mean you have to rely on weapons for your operations,'' he said.

The King acknowledged the problems in the country, which is in need of reconciliation.

''The country now is still not in order. But you can restore the order and make it strong with your strength.''

Through their work, order, happiness and peace will prevail. This, in turn, will result in the officers' own happiness and prosperity, His Majesty the King said.

''I am glad to see that you are strong. You need to maintain this strength to ensure peace and make the country free from any possible damage,'' he said.
