It acquitted two other defendants.General Panya Singsakda was charged with taking nearly Bt30 million given to the organisation from Government Lottery Office funds.

Panya is free on Bt4.38-million bail pending appeal.

The society accused Panya, its former vice president Worapoj Wongsa-nga and former treasurer Winai Pokhasab of stealing from it.

All three denied the charges.

The society said Panya and the others had deposited the money in a bank account and then spent Bt29.9 million for their personal use, including buying a van, a car and a pickup.

Panya claimed the money was given to him personally for social activities. The court ruled the society's funding request itemised its activities, and found the money was not for individuals.

Lottery-office director Police Lt-General Surasith Sangkhapong told the court Panya had never reported how the money had been spent.
