PPP pulling away

Today's Top Stories

The People Power party and its leader Samak Sundaravej continued to lead in the Post Poll internet survey conducted by the Bangkok Post.

The gap between the PPP and the Democrat party, its closest rival, was not so different from the last result late last month.

The latest result showed the PPP scoring 55 per cent of the votes, a four percentage point increase from the previous survey.

Their arch-rivals the Democrats obtained 40 per cent of the votes, down slightly from the previous survey which saw 41 per cent of voters favouring the country's oldest political party.

Mr Samak remained the top choice to become the next prime minister, receiving 52 per cent of the total votes, up from 48 per cent in the last survey.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva garnered 40 per cent, down one percentage point from last time round.

However, Democrat member Buranat Samuttarak said the methodology of an internet survey was more suitable for business purposes than for gauging political opinions.

He said it is difficult for a survey carried out via the internet to prevent people from casting their votes more than once, resulting in distorted figures.

Although the Bangkok Post and Post Today, its sister Thai-language daily, have stated that the Post Poll internet survey is not conducted using scientific or statistical methods and the results cannot be used for reference, Dr Buranat said that they could somehow influence voters' decisions.

In the latest survey, voters were still most concerned about the economy with 40 per cent of the total wanting the new government to tackle problems in this area first, and 20 per cent wanting the new administration to boost incomes.
