Quad core PC processors : Good for multi-taskers
Hanover, Germany (dpa) - Quad core processors will primarily be of interest to users who run several programs at the same time. Quad core processors can be helpful, for example, if video conversion software will be running parallel to a virus scanner - at the same time the user wants to surf the internet, says Benjamin Benz from Hanover-based c't magazine.
True multitasking is not the same thing as simply keeping several programs open at once. Working with Word while Excel is open in the background consumes few system resources and does not require the latest chips from Intel and AMD.
Chipmaker AMD recently presented its first desktop processors with four cores. AMD will initially bring two "Phenom" models onto the market with processing speeds of 2.3 and 2.2 Gigahertz. Taken together with a chip set and a graphics card, the new AMD processors form what is known as a spider platform.
AMD's competitor, market leader Intel, has already been offering quad core chips for the PC for some time now. Intel currently is ahead by a nose when it comes to processor speed, says c't expert Benjamin Benz. AMD's chips, though, are cheaper.
