Rename a batch of files

Rename a batch of files

WANDA SLOAN

These days, a renaming utility is almost a must-have on almost everyone's hard drive, and for the moment I have settled on one.

The colourfully if somewhat strangely named Spacetornado company's Renamer is able to do everything I currently want such a program to do. That is, I can't think up any more duties than the ones it has handled so well for me for the past couple of months.

Renamers are able to handle a huge number of files at once. The most obvious use would be to change the names of the 273 photos you have in a folder from your rugrat's sensational and talented kindergarten graduation dance performance from something like IMG-00157 to "2007 School Year 157".

If you throw away the 264 worst photos from the grand event, you can then rename the survivors in sequence again.

Spacetornado Renamer easily handles things like putting a new name on the front of the file name, or putting a date on the end of it. It has templates for such easy tasks as, say, putting "2007" or even "Dec 2007" in the filenames of all 4,500 photos you took this month.

One of the brilliant renaming chores, illustrated in the screenshot of the software, is to reset the file names of song titles in proper format.

The program not only easily handled more than 8,000 music tracks in less than 20 seconds. It also made few errors that I could find with problems such as when to capitalise "The" in the name of the composition or the artist. Again, templates already exist to do tasks such as to make the first letter of words capitals - except for a key few.

Given the combination of speed, programmed-in knowledge and the well-done, on-disk program manual, I intend to keep Spacetornado Renamer on my own computer for the foreseeable future.

The folks at Spacetornado live in lovely Oregon in the real world, and in cyberspace at http://www.spacetornado.com.
