ROYALTY :His Majesty the King wore a light green Chinese collar shirt, a white striped jacket and dark grey trousers as he paid a visit to his elder sister, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, at Siriraj hospital yesterday.

According to the Royal Household Bureau's 24th announcement, the Princess is still tired and feeling some discomfort in her abdomen.

She is receiving respiratory therapy, other medications and physiotherapy while physicians have continued to give her intravenous nourishment.

The Princess has been in Siriraj hospital since mid-June for treatment of abdominal cancer.

Teens stone, kill singer

KAMPHAENG PHET : A cafe singer was killed by a 1.5kg rock thrown by two teenagers who flew into a rage at obscenities she shouted at them.

The attack took place fifteen minutes after midnight yesterday in front of Manida Cafe on Ratchadamnoen road in Muang district.

The victim was identified as Saowapa Phetlek, 20, nicknamed Bia.

Before the attack, Saowapa was sitting in front of the cafe when two teenage boys rode a motorcycle past shouting taunts at her.

In a fit of anger, the singer responded by screaming obscenities at them.

Ten minutes later, they returned and threw the 1.5kg rock which hit her chest very hard and made her lose consciousness.

She was immediately brought to Kamphaeng Phet hospital, but was pronounced dead around 2am.

Pathologists found a large bruise on her chest. They said the impact might have caused internal injuries, leading to her death.

Council boss shot dead

NAKHON PATHOM :The council chairman of Huay Mon Thong tambon administration organisation was shot dead while at a funeral yesterday.

Police did not rule out a political conflict in the murder of Wit Kaewkangwan, 41, who was killed while playing cards with friends at the funeral, in a house in tambon Huay Mon Thong in Kamphaeng Saen district.

Provincial Police Region 7 commander Worapong Chiwapricha said there were possible political and business conflicts as Wit was in the construction business.

His wife Suni, 31, believed her husband's murder was political, saying he had no business problems.

Wit had served as chairman of Huay Mon Thong TAO for three years. He had nine months left in office.

Gunman gunned down

AYUTTHAYA :A gunman on a police watchlist ahead of the Dec 23 election was shot dead on Tuesday, police said.

Panya Poswas, also known as Noi Aka, 42, was killed in Bang Pahan district as he was riding a motorcycle home from a funeral.

Police linked Panya's murder to either a conflict with other gunmen or gamblers.

He had faced a charge of attempted murder of a policeman and drug possession, but kept a low profile.

Police had suspected some politicians might hire him to get rid of rivals.

Democrats lead in South

OPINION POLL :An opinion survey in the five southernmost provinces shows the Democrats out in front, but unlikely to make a clean sweep of all 22 seats.

Four universities polled 3,038 eligible voters in Songkhla, Satun, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat during Dec 1-7.

Asked who should assume the premiership, about 56% of the respondents went for Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, followed by Democrat chief adviser and former prime minister Chuan Leekpai (9%). People Power party (PPP) leader Samak Sundaravej trailed far behind with 4%.

Under proportionate representation voting, some 53% of the respondents said they would vote for the Democrats, while 8% would choose Puea Pandin and 7% the Chart Thai party.

For direct candidate voting, 42% supported the Democrats, followed by Puea Pandin (9%) and the PPP (8%).

The pollster said the Democrats were likely to win 19 seats, leaving one seat to the PPP and two seats to Puea Pandin.

Thai students win medals

SCIENCE OLYMPIADS :Six Thai students have won silver and bronze medals at the International Science Olympiads held recently in Taiwan.

The silver medallists were Worapan Bhudhasakda and Siripat Chong-aramrungrueng, both from Suankularb Wittayalai school, and Chonnawee Hiranpattasil from Yothinburana school.

Meanwhile, another three bronze medallists were Danupat Boonchalermchien from Saint Dominic school, Api Chiwacharat from Pathumwan Demonstration school, and Wannaporn Tienthong from Pathumwan Demonstration school.

The competition among secondary school students was held from Dec 2 until Tuesday.
