Three volunteer rangers hurt in Yala roadside bomb blast

Yala _ Three volunteer rangers were wounded in a roadside bomb attack and ambush in Muang district yesterday morning.

Wongsakorn Pimporn, 24, Chakkapong Saeng-ngam, 20, and Songkran Kaewbandit, 20, were hit by shrapnel from the blast on Ban Nieng-Pohseng road about 10.30am. Mr Songkran sustained critical injuries. All of them were admitted to Yala regional hospital.

Police said a 15-kilogramme improvised explosive device (IED) in a steel box with a battery detonator exploded as the pickup truck carrying the three volunteer rangers drove past.

After the explosion, hidden gunmen opening fire on the injured men before before fleeing.

Another 2kg bomb was found close to the crater at the blast scene while security forces inspected the site.

A bomb disposal team defused the device before it was detonated.

Also in Muang district, a bomb disposal squad defused two 15kg IEDs in fire extinguisher cylinders tied to a battery and buried underneath Lammai detour road in tambon Pron.

In neighbouring Narathiwat, three grocery shops were targeted by bombers in Rueso district on Tuesday. The explosions took place between 4.30pm and 7.30pm.

The first blast occurred at a grocery shop in front of Rueso railway station. No casualties were reported.

Two suspects were later detained. One of them appeared to have injured himself after a timed blast had exploded prematurely, police said.

A second blast went off at another grocery shop in a Rueso district fresh market. Again, no one was hurt.

Shortly afterwards, a third blast was reported at a grocery shop next to the second blast site. The shop owner was injured by shrapnel from the blast.

Thirteen teenagers seen near the blast scene were detained for questioning. Police were investigating if they were involved in the attacks.
