Ceramics lecture

Roxanna M. Brown will lecture on "Matching Thai Ceramics and Ayutthaya History" at the Siam Society.

Her talk will explore how Suphan Buri shipping jars were replaced by Sing Buri jars in the early 15th century.

Brown will propose an explanation for the Thai attack on Angkor in 1431, explain how the Zhenghe voyages affected the style of Thai ceramics and offer explanations for the abrupt change from classic Thai celadon to postclassic celadon and for the re-introduction of underglaze black painted decoration. She will also discuss the evidence against the old theory about the lack of Thai ceramics exports in the 16th century.

Brown received her PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, in January 2004, and she is a director of the Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum, which was recently established at the Rangsit campus of Bangkok University. The lecture will be on January 24 at 7:30pm at the Siam Society, Sukhumvit Road Soi 21. For more information, call Preechaya or Arunsri on 02-661 6470 - 7. Siam Society members, members' spouses and children, and students showing ID cards, will be admitted free of charge (200 baht for non-members).
