Foreign leaders share grief

Foreign dignitaries and leaders across the world have sent their condolences to His Majesty the King and the royal family to share their grief over the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.

''I was shocked to learn with great grief of the untimely passing away of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana,'' Hu Jintao, president of the People's Republic of China, said in a message of condolence to the royal family.

''Her Royal Highness, an old friend of the Chinese people, made valuable contributions to the development of Thailand's friendly relations with China,'' Mr Hu said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy also conveyed his sorrow and heartfelt sympathy to His Majesty the King over the death of the Princess, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Jarungwat.

In the message sent to the King, Mr Sarkozy said his government and the French people felt the deepest sorrow for the monarch and extended moral support to the royal family and the Thai people in their time of sadness, he said.

The French government has recognised the role of the late Princess in promoting French language and culture in Thailand, according to the message.
