Govt calls 15 days of mourning

The cabinet yesterday advised all companies and venues to suspend festive activities and asked the public to wear black during the 15-day mourning period for Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana. The government did not elaborate on what it meant by ''festive activities''.

The cabinet has set up a committee, chaired by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, to arrange and oversee the royal cremation for the late Princess. Thanpuying Tassanavalai Sornsongkram, the Princess' daughter, is also sitting on the committee.

Under His Majesty the King's command the Princess' casket was placed under a white five-tiered royal umbrella which indicated the royal status of the Princess in the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall.

Chanting of excerpts from the Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures) began yesterday. There will be funeral chanting of Abhidhamma excerpts for 100 days in the Grand Palace.

A royal crematorium will be built at Sanam Luang for her cremation.
