Painter Somsak Raksuwan returns to the local art scene with a new controversial exhibition, "Political Monsters", opening today at Jamjuree Art Gallery on Rama I Road.

His new paintings address the current political problems in post-coup Thailand, corruption and related issues. The 15 paintings depict monsters, meant to symbolise corrupt politicians.

The opening reception is at 6.30pm on Monday. The show runs until January 3.

Sweet songs

Legendary soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa from New Zealand

performs at 8pm on Monday at Thailand Cultural Centre as part of her "Farewell Tour". Accompanying her will be the pianist Julan Reynolds and the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

The programme includes "Ridente la calma, K 152", "An Chloe K 524", "Abendempfindung K 523" and "Un moto di gioia K 579" by Mozart; "Standchen Op 17, No 2", "Die Nacht Op 10, No 3", "All mein Gedanken Op 21, No 1", "Morgen Op 27, No 4" and "Zueignung Op 10, No 1" by Richard Strauss; Poulenc's "Voyage Paris", "Banalites: No 2, Hotel", "Les chemins de l'amour (Valse Chantee)"; and Puccini's "Sole e amore (Mattinata)" and "Morire".

Music from free spirits

Suan Lum Night Bazaar will host an indie music and art festival from 4pm tomorrow.

The Radio Dept from Sweden will perform, along with Thai bands including Modern Dog, Flure, Scrubb, Apartment Khun Paa, Futon and Richman Toy. The bands will be competing for the honour to be selected to perform in England.

Participating artists include SO:ON Dry Flower project featuring Attajan, Jakkrawan, Desktop Error, Talkless and Koichi, Duck Unit Art of wall and Lomo Team.

Admission is free.

K-pop gods

Korean boy band TVXQ will perform at 8pm tomorrow and Sunday at Impact Arena in their "O" concert as part of their Asian tour.

Known by their Chinese name "Tong Vfang Xien Qi" or "Rising Gods of the East", the quintet of Max, Hero, Micky, U-know and Xiah will present hits from their latest alum "O-Jung Ban Hub", such as "O-Jung Ban Hub", "You're My Miracle", "I'll Be There", "Remember", "Hey! Girl" and "You Only Love".
