Get the culprits

Get the culprits.

DATELINE BANGKOK

Daily News Editorial Whoever they are, the perpetrators of the New Year's Eve bombings in Bangkok must be condemned by all peace-loving people. Tens of thousands of Bangkokians were on their way to celebrate the New Year last Sunday when the capital was rocked by eight bombs that killed three people and wounded 37 others, including nine tourists.

The government has suggested that political groups which lost power after the Sept 19 coup were behind this. While the perpetrators have yet to be named, we must condemn this act of terror because it has hurt the country and innocent people. The attackers clearly wanted to cause panic and undermine the country's economy and security. Tourism will also be badly affected.

The act of terror was blatant because it took place right in the heart of Bangkok. It challenged the power of the Council for National Security (CNS), which put the country under martial law after ousting the elected government of prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The government must do its utmost to bring the culprits to justice. Evidence collected from the crime scenes and eyewitness accounts should enable the government to identify the persons behind this act of terror.
