Royal pardon for 10,000 inmates
(BangkokPost.com) – His Majesty the King has announced a bill to grant prisoners held at the Corrections Department with a royal pardon.
Up to 10,000 prisoners of the 170,000 currently being held there are expected to be freed through the royal pardon to mark His Majesty the King’s 80th birthday anniversary on Dec 5.
Most of the inmates freed would have been serving a minor jail sentence of less than one year. Others, who are serving punishments for more severe crimes, will have their sentences commuted.
Dr Wisuth Boonkamsemsant, charged with the murder of his wife, Dr Phassaporn several years ago and sentenced to death, is one of the lucky ones who had his sentence commuted to life in prison.
