Suthipol : EC alone will decide on VCD case
(BangkokPost.com) – Suthipol Thaweechaikan, secretary-general of the Election Commission, has stressed that it is up to the EC to determine whether electoral violation occurred when VCDs containing a message from ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra asking for voter support of the People Power party were distributed to the north and northeastern regions.
“The EC’s job is to decide whether an individual had breached election laws and punish that individual if he/she is found guilty,” Mr Suthipol said.
“We have to carefully examine the person who appeared in the VCD and also look at those responsible for making it before reaching a decision.”
The EC secretary-general also confirmed reports that a meeting will be held to discuss the classified documents case.
“The Council for National Security will present us with the original documents today,” he said, “but whether or not we are able to reach a conclusion by today depends on what we have on the table.”
Asked about the possible dissolution of parties found to have committed electoral fraud, Mr Suthipol admitted that dissolution cases are strictly for the Constitutional Court to decide.
“The one thing that is within the EC’s powers is handing out yellow and red cards to candidates before the election,” he said.
