Tharnawat grabs solitary gold

Tharnawat Thanakornworakiart grabbed the only gold for the Thai swimming team while Tao Li won two out of four golds for Singapore in the pool yesterday.
Tharnawat clocked 3:59.08 minutes in the mens 400m freestyle. He beat close rivals MIngzhe Marcus of Singapore and Ryan Arabejo of the Philippines who timed 3:59.61 and 3:59.81 respectively.
Tharnawat only the bronze in the 2005 Games and had predicted a top-three finish in this event.
It is his fourth appearance in the Games, although previously he competed under the name of Charnwuth Saengsri. He targets the gold in today's mens 1500m freestyle.
The Thai team of Thanyanant Phadungkiatwattana, Kunanon Kittipute, Suriya Suksuphak and Radomyos Matjiur also took bronze in the men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay.
Thailand missed out in the other five events.
Tao Li of the Singapore was outstanding yesterday as the 17-year-old defended her own title in the women's 100m backstroke in 1:04.05. Later, she clocked 1:00.33 minutes to win the gold in the women's 100m butterfly.
The other two gold medals for Singapore came from Zach Ong in the men's 100m backstroke and the mens 4x100m freestyle relay.
Daniel Bego of Malaysia smashed the record of 54.33 seconds in the men's 100m butterfly. The former record holder was compatriot Lim Keng Liat of 55.04 seconds in 2003. Malaysia also won the gold in the womens 800m freestyle.
There are six golds up for grabs in today's swimming.
